Camden Town Market in London

Camden Town Market in London has become the place to visit and to shop for locals and tourists alike. What began as a stop-off in the 1790's has now become one of the most bustling areas of London.

Its evolution to the market of today really began after the contruction of Regents Canal in the 1870's, when the area became a warehouse and production area. The prosperity didn't last long, and the area was left to slowly decline.

The concept of Camden Market was started when, in the 1970's, a few friends decided to create a market in the area. This began the transformation into the vast market that we have in the 21st century. Today, Camden Town is known for its cosmopolitan flair and incredible array of shops and restaurants, catering to carnivores and the discerning vegetarian, where there is truly something for everyone.

Accessible by train, underground, or bus, please note the tube stations are often very crowded, but are the most direct ways. In the past, the market was a weekend event only, but with the tremendous crowds and consistent shoppers, it is now open every day, with most shops open from 10AM-6PM.

The market is divided into many different areas, each with their own flavor and unique items for sale. Camden Lock is the original, and is the place to buy all sorts of original items. There are artisans with handcrafted items, antique furniture, and original jewlery. The largest section of the market is Stable Market.

The Stable is a combination of open air and indoor markets, with large amounts of alternative fashions, vintage wares, and international items. Buck Street, Inverness Street, and Camden Lock Village are all areas that sell modern fashions and clubwear, and there is a fruit and vegetable market that has been open since 1900.

Throughout the marketplace there are a variety of restaurants and pubs that are open daily and offer every variety of food and atmosphere. At night, although the stalls are closed, there is a busy night scene, with various venues offering live music and dancing. The music scene is as varied as the street market, and there is something for every taste in music.

Camden Town Market in London has become a microcosm of London itself. Set against a backdrop of warehouses from the 1800's yet continually being refurbished and modernised, it represents the same cosmopolitan attitude of the city in which it resides.
